Chapter 20

During the next days and weeks, I put all of my effort into finding a job. I was filling out applications daily. It didn’t even have to require a marketing degree, I was open and willing for any reasonable position that would pay me a decent salary. It wasn’t easy, though.

Friends and family were suggesting jobs and openings that they heard about. I was even getting texts about signs posted in windows. I wasn’t that desperate, yet. I wanted to work somewhere that was interesting and not a place that was quick to hire high school kids. It was a difficult balance, apparently.

I had gotten together with my friends a few days after getting home. We all met up at the beach and swapped stories. They were shocked to hear all about my adventures and disappointed when I told them nothing happened between me and Antonio. I had spent enough time questioning my decision about leaving him, I didn’t need my friends to do it, too.

I was happy to change the subject and hear all about their Club Med Cancun vacation. They all said they met someone, even though Jenny already had someone, but it was all in fun and that was that. I kept asking them to give more details, but they insisted there was nothing more to tell. I wasn’t so sure.

We all promised that we would never vacation separately again. I did miss these girls. I expressed my need for a job and they all had their opinions. Trish said they are always looking for more realtors, or a receptionist in the office. Nancy would be two hours away soon, so she was no help. Jenny was at the bottom of the ladder as it was, she couldn’t help me.

I was sure I’d find something soon, I just didn’t know what it would be. I also didn’t know how long it would take to materialize. I tried to be patient, but we were now at the end of August.

I had also gotten together with Chad, again. He promised he had another great restaurant to try out, and it wasn’t Italian. It was Mexican. Chad ordered a beer and I got a margarita. He wasn’t being very talkative, so while we waited for our food I decided to ask the hard questions.

I took his hand and asked, “Chad, how are you?”

He tried to shrug it off like everything was fine, but I knew better. “I’m good.”

“How are things at home?”

“Good.”

I knew things were bad when he said they were good. He also knew I wouldn’t give up.

“I really want to ask Doreen out, but I know it will also be a waste of time,” he said.

“Doreen?”

“Yes, the new teller at my bank,” he clarified.

Now I remembered. She started a month or so ago. The last I knew, he said she was kinda cute. I also knew that dating a girl meant bringing her home and meeting his family.

Chad was stuck. He wanted to move out and live the life of a normal twenty-three year old, but he was afraid to leave his parents alone.
